Questions & Answers: Grant RFPs

What is a grant RFP?

A RFP is a Request for Proposal, which essentially means a grant application. Most grant RFPs provide information as to what is required in the proposal to meet the goals, guidelines, and objectives of the grant.  However, RFP requirements may differ greatly across grants. Therefore, it is crucial to read and follow RFP guidelines to increase the chances of receiving grant funding.

What do most grant RFPs require?

  • Title Page
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
  • Needs Assessment
  • Goals, Objectives, & Activities
  • Evaluation Plan
  • Personnel & Their Project Roles
  • Budget

In plain language, what do most grant RFPs require?

  • What agency is submitting the propsoal, why are they submitting it, and how it is relevant to the RFP?
  • What is the agency's project?
  • Why does the project need to be conducted?
  • Who will participate in the project activities?
  • What are the objectives of the project and are they realistic, practical, affordable, and expected to create change?
  • Who will conduct the project activities and how will they do it?
  • What is the budget for the project?

What are some types of grant RFPs and how can my agency access them?

How long does it take to write and submit a grant proposal?

The time involved in writing a grant proposal greatly depends on the type of grant, its required page length, and the required supporting documentation. Some grants, typically foundation grants, can be as short as 6 pages and thus do not require extensive time commitments. Other grants, especially federal grants, are more comprehensive and may have a required 35-40 page length. As such, more time is needed to write these proposals.

Ascend Evaluation, based in Lewisburg, WV, will work with your organization to find grant RFPs that best fit your needs. This is a part of Ascend Evaluation's initial consultation and is provided at no cost to you. During this consultation, we collectively discuss whether you would like Ascend Evaluation to write the entire proposal, sections of the proposal, or provide guidance and facilitation to increase your organization's capacity to write and submit proposals internally.
